LO: to explore the context and layout design for GQ magazine
GQ is the magazine for men with an IQ
GQ Context: according to the feminist theory, GQ has a history of objectifying women in its magazine, which promotes Chauvinist attitude towards women
Beginning in the 1990s, the magazines pivoted to a near strict pattern of women
How does GQ target its audiences?
women are underdressed and very sexualised and objectified however then men are put as leaders and boss of everyone

. low angle making him look stronger and important look down on the readers
.the black colour pallet making an angel black when they are traditionally white showing us that he is nit ashamed of his race
. his stance makes him look stronger and more dominate
. him being and angel when they are more stereotypically feminine is him challenging stereotypes
. makes him seem like a protector in football
. his gun tattoo on his leg which was very criticised in the photo he is proudly showing his tattoos
Analysing
the magazine cover published in 2019 by GQ having Raheem sterling a professional football player as the cover star, who was fighting racism in football at the time he was shown as a guardian angel presenting him protecting other black football players. The black colour platte is hinting that he is does not care about his race and is proud, as traditionally angel are more feminine and normally white in this  cover page he is challenging stereotypes.
The main cover line guardian angel is serif when most the other text is san serif this shows us that it is more feminine and seems to have more emotions in it and it sticks out to the rest of the texts trying to stick out the fact that he is an angel in not a bad person like everyone makes him out to be
the main cover image make him see more powerful his stance makes him see strong and confident and the long shot makes him looking down on us and the chains tell us that he is off a higher class and is wealthy

  • she was born in 1997
  • she got shot when she was 15 in the bus on the way to school in the head by the Taliban.
  • she won many awards for her being an activists
Malala Yousafzai is famous because she is an educational activist and a Nobel peace prize winner and the youngest ever to do so, she was also asked to right a book about the Taliban and how much their rules hurts her and other girls under the same rules. Once the Taliban found out it was her righting the blog when she was on the bus on the way to school and one of the men stopped and got on the bus and shot her in the back of the head, she survived but was ill for quite a while but is now fully recovered from her bravery and inspirational story i think
put her on the front cover to show women can be strong and independent

cover analysis: Malala                                                                                    Friday 24th January 2025

Analyse the cover for how media language has been used to create different meanings.
  • main image
  • anchorage
  • cover lines
  • layout
Firstly, the main image shows Malala Yousafzai in a red scarf it uses direct address because it shows power and strength the colour red has connotations of courage and bravery this links to Malala because she is a brave and powerful motivational speaker for young girls education her passion towards her beliefs also her righting book about the Taliban and how there rules affect her and how they make her and others around her feel this caused her to get shot in the head by the Taliban on her way to school and some how survived the caption "survivor" elevates her importance
secondly, the red scarf represents the importance of her culture and religion secondly the main cover line, the white clearly contrast with the re background celebrating her name and her status. Malalas name and her importance is highlighted and framed by the italicised text

the cover lines show reinforce vogue authority as the fashion bible, and also the righting vogue goes over Malalas head this could be hinting that she doesn't need to be in front of the title to show her importance and dominance

Malala Representation

In the past, muslims have been represented as terrorists and mainly straight, physically fit and mainly men.
in terms of ethnicity the vogue cover shows and mention dark skinned people

Explain how both ethnicity & gender have been represented on the vogue cover.

Gender is represented in a stereotypical way you can see this as Malala looks very feminine with a headdress, jewellery, make up and in the cover image she is very classy and sophisticated as females are usually seen in very delicate and more about beauty most topics around females are normally based around relationships and fashion and never link to sports or work. these features outnumber others and support stereotype of women being more concerned about appearance and superficiality

but gender is also represented in an anti-stereo typical way by putting fighting talk on there with a male boxer which tells us that women are fighters and how it says " survivor, activist, legend the survivor shows us how she has over come it and she is not the victim how women and females are normally shown as this tells us how she is a fighter and is strong and powerful and also the sporting idea depicts strong and powerful women.

Do now

1. diversity is shown in vogue covers
2. fighting talk
3. strong, powerful, and courageous
4. as a legend and a survivor when women are normally put as victims
5. muslims has been represented as terrorist in the past

Comparing
LO: to compare representations in magazine covers

Similarities
  • both feminine
  • sophisticated
  •  similar colours to show there passion and strength
  • jewellery makes them look luxury and wealthy
  • they both have there first names on the cover this shows us that most people will know them without there surname
Differences
  • Lizzos is more about politics
  • Malalas is more about fighting and being a survivor
  • Malala looks more gentle and sweet however Lizzo looks powerful and bold
  • the main cover line is behind lizzos head but on Malalas cover it is in front of her head
  • all of Malalas cover is red while Lizzos is not her back is grey

this shows us class and sophistication but as well showing different ethnicity

Assessment dirt

Question 1:
- add more details and use more connotations
-

Vogue shows layout and design and there meaning in the Malala cover by putting the text in a very orderly and sophisticated design personality making her look classy and in amore higher class. As well as her design with her clothes and jewellery that makes her look like

Question 2: Social context influence magazines because opinions and what the public thinks of certain people or situations for example in the Malalas cover would be a lot of judgement on the cover if there wasn't anything on politics as Malala is a vert well known activist
